Welcome to the College of Nursing at the Texas A&M Health Science Center. I am very pleased you are visiting our website and wanting to know more about the College and our commitment to excellence. The College of Nursing was approved in 2008 to offer baccalaureate nursing education. The College has adopted a vision to raise health-care quality and to expand the educated nursing workforce in Texas and world wide. It is the goal of the College to provide a stimulating learning environment. This is being accomplished by:
• Hiring faculty who are experienced in the academic and practice arenas
• Recruiting and nurturing high-achieving students
• Providing state-of –the-art technology for classroom and clinical simulations
• Partnering with area hospitals and other health care sites to provide outstanding clinical experiences.
If you have ever thought about becoming a nurse, this is the time. As the “baby boomer” generation ages, demand for nurses and health care will increase. At the same time the need is increasing, many nurses are reaching retirement age. There are already too few nurses to meet the demand. Over the past 10 years, there has been a nursing shortage throughout the United States – the longest shortage since World War II. The Institute for Policy Research estimates that 8.5 percent of nursing positions in the United States are unfilled. That percentage is projected to triple by 2020.
A career in nursing has always been both satisfying and rewarding, and the healthcare needs of individuals, families and populations demand a highly qualified nursing workforce prepared for the challenges of the future. Please browse our site and contact us if you have any questions or comments. We look forward to hearing from you.
