What Makes A Competitive Applicant?

Prospective students often want to know what it takes to be admitted to the Texas A&M College of Nursing programs. Below you will find information on how applicants are evaluated as well as admission statistics for the last several cycles of Second Degree BSN applicants.


  • Admission Criteria

    Admission to the College of Nursing is competitive. It is strongly recommended that applicants present a GPA above 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). 

    Applicants will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:

    • Prerequisite Coursework GPA.  Graduate coursework is not considered
    • Nursing Science GPA  from nutrition, anatomy & physiology I & II, microbiology, chemistry, lifespan growth & development, and mathematics
    • HESI Admissions Assessment exam score
    • Personal statement
    • Community service
    • Leadership/involvement in extracurricular and/or professional activities
    • TOEFL score, required of international applicants only

    January 2017 admissions

    The college received 214 applications for 46 seats (24 in College Station and 22 in Round Rock). Among the students enrolled, the average overall GPA was 3.67, the average Nursing Science GPA was 3.72, and the average cumulative Admissions Assessment HESI score was a 93. Overall GPAs of admitted students ranged from 3.13 to 4.0.

    January 2016 admissions

    The college received 210 applications for 44 places (24 in College Station and 20 in Round Rock). Among the students enrolled, the average overall GPA was a 3.63, the average Nursing Science GPA was a 3.74, and the average cumulative Admissions Assessment HESI score was a 93. Overall GPAs of admitted students ranged from 3.19 to 4.0.

    January 2015 admissions

    The college received 194 applications for 42 places (22 in College Station and 20 in Round Rock). Among the students enrolled, the average overall GPA was a 3.52, the average Nursing Science GPA was a 3.71, and the average cumulative Admissions Assessment HESI score was a 93. Overall GPAs of admitted students ranged from 3.05 to 3.96.

    January 2014 admissions

    The college received 204 applications for 42 places (22 in College Station and 20 in Round Rock). Among the students enrolled, the average overall GPA was a 3.58, the average Nursing Science GPA was a 3.79, and the average cumulative Admissions Assessment HESI score was a 92.8. Overall GPAs of admitted students ranged from 3.08 to 3.88.
